Looking back along the beach at Yallingup, the sand runs in one long unbroken curve with the town sitting up in the bush behind it and the water shifting from pale green over the sandbars out to deep blue. This is the view people picture when they think of the South West in summer.

Yallingup means "place of love" in the Noongar language, and it has earned the name twice over — as the birthplace of Western Australian surfing over a century ago, and as the beach generations of families have returned to every Christmas since. The heritage-listed Caves House Hotel, built in 1903, still sits in its gardens above the sand, and Canal Rocks and Ngilgi Cave are minutes away.

The entire image lives on that curve, so it was flown from far enough out to hold the whole sweep without distorting it — and the drone's 100MP Hasselblad camera keeps it sharp right across the full width at every print size.

About The Location

Yallingup means place of love in Noongar, and after enough mornings here you stop questioning the name. This is where surfing in Western Australia actually began, more than a century ago, and the place still runs on that same easy rhythm.

For this frame I flew well out and looked back along the beach, because Yallingup's whole character is in that curve — the sand bending away, the town sitting up in the bush rather than on the sand, the water going pale green over the bars and then blue.

Shooting from distance is the only way to hold a curve like that without bending it out of shape, and it demands resolution to survive the crop. The 100MP Hasselblad on the Mavic 4 Pro keeps it sharp corner to corner. Caves House has been standing above this beach since 1903, watching this exact view. I just borrowed the better angle.
