Manly Beach Art Print — Sydney, New South Wales

Manly runs in one long unbroken line from the Corso down to Queenscliff, with the Norfolk pines standing along the promenade the whole way. This aerial photograph looks down that stretch: surfers working the banks, the shorebreak drawing its white line, and the town rising behind the pines.

Those pines are the signature. Planted along the promenade over a century ago, they give Manly a silhouette no other Sydney beach has — and they're the first thing you see coming in on the ferry. "Seven miles from Sydney and a thousand miles from care" was the town's advertising slogan a hundred years ago, and it still holds.

I flew the length of it, from the Corso down toward Queenscliff, with surfers working the banks and the shorebreak drawing its white line the whole way. A hundred years ago the town advertised itself as seven miles from Sydney and a thousand miles from care. It still holds up.
