Gannet Rocks Canvas Print — Dunsborough, Western Australia

Around Gannet Rock the granite keeps going under the surface, and on a clear day the whole reef platform is visible from the air: pale boulders, dark weed and clean sand between them, all held in blue. This is the structure snorkellers and divers come here for, seen whole for once instead of in glimpses.

Sitting off the Dunsborough coast in the sheltered waters of Geographe Bay, this reef system is protected from the prevailing weather by Cape Naturaliste. That shelter is why the water clears the way it does, and why this stretch has long been one of the region's favourite spots to get in with a mask on — a short run from the Dunsborough foreshore and the Meelup Regional Park beaches.

From the air the entire reef platform reveals itself at once: pale boulders, dark weed, clean sand channels between them, the whole thing suspended in blue.

Water this clear is completely unforgiving to photograph. There is nowhere for a soft file to hide — every ledge and edge under the surface is on show, and if the detail is not there the print looks like a smudge.
