Eagle Bay Beach Wall Art — Dunsborough, Western Australia

This is Eagle Bay at eye level with the water: a single unbroken line of shore break running the full width of the frame, deep blue stacked above it, and the bushland headland closing off the far end. It is the view you get walking the sand toward Meelup — the one that makes people stop halfway and just stand there.

Sheltered inside Geographe Bay on the northern side of Cape Naturaliste, Eagle Bay is the calmest water in the South West. The peppermint trees of Meelup Regional Park run almost to the sand, there is no development in sight, and the shore break arrives in one long gentle line rather than crashing sets. That geography is the whole photograph.

Personally shot by Australian aerial photographer Matthew Philip on a DJI Mavic 4 Pro with a 100MP Hasselblad camera. A single continuous wave line across a frame this wide is unforgiving — any softness shows immediately — and this file stays razor sharp corner to corner, which is what makes the large and panoramic sizes work rather than merely exist.

About The Location

There is a walk I do every time I am down here — along the Eagle Bay sand toward Meelup Regional Park, peppermint trees on one side, that impossibly calm water on the other. Halfway along, the shore break lines up into one continuous thread the whole length of the bay, and I have wanted that as a photograph for years.

So I flew low and level for this one, right down at eye height with the water rather than looking straight down. The whole image is that single wave line, deep blue above it, and the bush headland shutting off the far end.

It is a brutal composition to print — one soft patch anywhere along that line and the whole thing collapses. The 100MP Hasselblad camera on the Mavic 4 Pro holds it corner to corner, which is why this one works at panoramic sizes. Afterwards I rode up to the brewery for a pizza. That is a good morning in anyone's book.
