Duranbah Sunset Headland Print — New South Wales

The headland at Duranbah with the beach curving away beneath it, shot at sunset with a single pink cloud sitting over the point. The water inside the wall goes glassy while the swell keeps working along the open sand.

There is a moment on this stretch of coast where the wind drops out completely and the inside goes to glass while the outside is still moving. That is the whole photograph, really — two different states of the same ocean, twenty metres apart.

Personally shot by aerial photographer Matthew Philip on a DJI Mavic 4 Pro. Its 100MP Hasselblad camera resolves remarkable detail — the rock wall, the treeline and the gradient of the shallows all stay razor sharp, even printed at large statement sizes.

About The Location

Late in the evening the wind on this stretch tends to drop out altogether, and when it does the water behind the wall goes completely flat while the swell is still marching along the open sand.

That is what I was after here. Two different oceans in the one frame, separated by a line of rock — glassy and still on one side, working and white on the other. A single pink cloud parked itself over the point about a minute before I took it, which I will happily take credit for.

The 100MP Hasselblad on the Mavic 4 Pro picks up the gradient in the shallows without it banding, which is the hard part of shooting water this pale at this time of day.
